Description of the particular artworks

Prof. Marian Karel, artist

Designed artwork tries to solve the problem caused by breaking down the southern front of the square. The destination of Svobody Street is not visible from most of  its parts. The square appears gradually from behind the terrain break. Looking from the square the southern direction seems to disappear. The sense of the designed artwork is to keep observer´s attention until the moment of seeing the square as a unit and enter it.

The design tries to be free of political proclamations which could be, like in the past, reason for its devastation. It just tries to state that medieval Cheb opened itself to the new industrial period in this place.

Operative title of the artwork is Gate of History

Gate is a universal symbol, apparent and obvious figure, legible even in abstract version. Its simple form has two basic positions: open and closed. In the closed position the frame and gate leaf are in one symmetric board. In the open position the massive leaf turns from the quite subtle frame. This way a fragile asymmetric composition rises which is possible to pass through.

Jaroslav Róna

Basic space relations are slant paved square which becomes broad and very long  from street size, with the dominant - block of gothic buildings, called Špalíček. Basic vision is, that the artwork should not compete with Špalíček, it should be centrally situated and not very indented and eye-catching.

I have created a kind of „Omfalos" which means navel of the world, a place with strong symbolic significance. A place, which would form imaginary centre of the town and followingly of the world. This designed „navel" results from ellipse shape which is more suitable than a circle and at the same time ellipse is a bipolar form with two focuses symbolizing the basic YOU nad ME, relation between God and human. The ellipse-shaped stone is covered with a relief forming net of multiplied fractal which is infinitely connecting and multiplying formation as a basis of many natural structures. The stone has an ellipse-shaped basin around it where the water flows and you can hear typical pleasant noise. A simple shape for relaxing of  passing people is designed  around the fountain, which enables meeting and communication among inhabitants and visitors of the town.

Dark granite polished sphere set with milestons dates rotates chaotically on the water surface in Baroque stainless (wrought) cage on Romanesque-Gothic pedestal from roughly cut stone standing on Slavonic hill paved with long granite fragments sloping down to drainage connecting it with the time axis explaining the sense of the dates on the sphere.

Marie Šeberová, sculptor

Design of artwork on King George Square in Cheb is drawn to be a sculptural installation ideologically connected with the town´s history and continuing the artwork - demogram - drainage cover. Designed solution marks and specifies the nature of the given place.

This sculptural installation is considered to be some kind of „meeting point" of people, ideas, feelings, history ....... The installation consists of two units: stone sculpture  - a bench, and a bronze subject.

The subject - pyramid is an imaginary spot. The surface is covered with a relief structure with random words from the texts on town  history used on the drainage cover. These words without context cover each other, form layers, connect themselves and  form a new structure this way without clear historical meaning. In the contrary, this is a new visual situation legible in many ways.

The subject - bench is introduced as an antropomorphic being which can (or not) be called Angel, Guard or Alien. We can imagine it as a dumb witness from the ancient times of the beginning and the whole town history.

Dalibor Bača, artist

Chronological axis of Cheb is fluently connected with two discs unwinding from it. The sculptural artefact, axis of Cheb and fountain with drinking point at the end of the axis are understood as one ideologically connected artistic subject.

An important element of the whole design is water flowing in stream from a bronze object - sculpture and streams through slots in a spiral situated (lying) on the pedestrian zone surface. Particular lines of the spiral fluently get connected with the time axis.

The bronze artefact situated on the square symbolizes the initial period. The sculpture´s shape is abstract. Part of its body has geometric shape but gradually it turns into organic rounded shapes. This organic part is connected with the water spring flowing out of it.It is possible to percept it as a spring of movement, energy, life, which started in 1061. The water is led to the machinery of history.

The history axis is finished with a small disc symbolically signing future development - the coming generations. In the middle of the disc water element is designed (a fountain). Its function is to be a drinking point for passing people.

Jean-Paul Chablais

Artwork design on the King George Square is intended as a sculpture composed of a 5 m high column standing on the confluence of the streets and the square. The column opens itself and forms a kind of gap, an imaginary passage and eye sight. A figure is coming through this passage. It symbolically introduces changeover from the past to the future. The sculpture is a symbolic portrait of Cheb and its permanent role is to be a meeting place of civilizations, cultures and ideas.

The sculpture is situated in the ending part of the square and is installed on a stone pedestal.

Luděk Míšek, Mga.

I have solved the artefact on the square as a column in minimalistic conception. The column is a central point, place for meetings. It is an artefact of an ancient menhir - place of origin - connecting the Earth with space, meeting point. The whole column is composed only of cylinders and blocks in various sizes and proportions on the fundament of which you can see tension and seeking  of visual harmony together with unrest and motion of the space. Principle of imprinting where circle is drawn in a square, square into circle and this way it continues and the whole column is growing from the space towards the Earth and it becomes its part. I have used method of slow turning of blocks and cylinders - one block is always turned clockwise and brings illusion of movement and turning.

Designed solution originates from the requirement of finishing the time axis with artwork (subject). This subject is a kind of symbol of the town as book with outcoming information - the time axis (demogram).

The subject grows from the pavement and is composed of gradually miniaturizing paving stones in the same order like they are layed around. Thus they create impression of town mass grown for the purpose to pass information in the time axis continuing from it through the pedestrian zone.

Aleš Andrle

For forming and completing the beginning of time axis which I give greater importance I have chosen a fountain. The square already has two fountains and so a fountain in this part of the square is a logical topping out.

A low, apparently simple circle form binds more complicated shape of superelevated spiral. The spiral´s task is to bring water to and from the centre in an interesting way and create pictures on the water surface in the functional period. Thanks to the declining spiral the streaming gets a definite direction. This winding and unwinding wave motion is the best way to show passing of the time. In the period when the fountain is not filled with water the fountain relief directs the observer to the same imaginative game with flowing and sequences of time and space. Even with contribution of weather conditions (snow) interesting ornaments will form themselves on the surface promoting the own time life of the subject.

Lukáš Wagner, Mga.

I have chosen composition of rotary bodies evoking passage of the time. I also tried to make the place pleasant in human criterion which is a kind of possibility to relax and meet people.

I chose a spindle as dominant shape on the surface of which water flows from its top and it turns counter-clockwise. This leaves trace similar to traces in the sand in Japanese zen gardens. I achieved this result by seven guide rails winded on the spindle surface which give direction to the streaming water and imprint it as a record on water surface. The bottom bowl of the fountain has shape suitable for comfortable sitting and listening to streaming water.

The bottom bowl is also turning, approximately like a merry-go-round. Water passing is accelerated by turning and the subject becomes interactive and interesting for a person communicating with the fountain. Balancing element on the top of the fountain is symbolically transformed coat-of-arms of the town emphasizing time and influence sphere of this town on its close and more distant surroundings. In winter the sculpture is able to function without water because kinetic mechanism is independent on water.

The scale was chosen in size corresponding with the size of present fountains and to complete the space in relation to human, which means to connect the square with Svobody Street optically and meaning-based.

Pavel Drda, sculptor

The author suggests locating the artefact to the axis of Březinova Street, deeper into the square because of efficient using the perspective on the King George Square.

The beginning of the time axis moves about 12 m.

The designed artefact is sculpture „Big Joy". It is a figural sculpture expressing spontaneous joy of human being. In the more and more complicated world the sculpture offers realizing of one of the simplest and at the same time the most beautiful human feelings - joy. The subjects invites to stop, touch with eyes and palms, inspires to smile and good mood.

Miloslav Svoboda, sculptor

After evaluating the situation and space of the King George Square the author suggests to locate the artefact to the axis of Březinova Street, deeper into the square. The beginning of the time axis moves about 12 m.

As for content the artefact is designed as a fountain. The subject should evoke historical parts of  Cheb. The author intends to return to one of historical solutions of the square (there was a fountain in the 18th century in this place).

A block is designed in the walls of which there are windows, throuhgviews, some of them being real, some blind. „Roofing" is symbolic, forged steel bar in shape of pyramid roof. Water will flow from some gaps freely pouring down the walls.

Antonín Kašpar, sculptor

When working on the sculpture I reflected following: the sculpture should stand in the upper part of the square and is supposed to form a dominant. A fountain used to stand in this place, so it would be a good idea to use water element for the sculpture. The sculpture should not be demarcated by a stone basin or banister. Here used to be a gate to the original town, so the sculpture could evoke gate arch or at least its part and invite the observer to pass through the arch as allegoric gate from history to present or conversely. The sculpture in such an important place should carry a clear message refering to the past, valid at present and, if possible, timely even for future generations. The sculpture should have an interactive element cohering it to the town life to remain actual for the citizens.

That is why I decided for two-piece sculpture.

Obelisk - black prism made from polished granite. Water supply will be led from the centre of the upper board rebated to form a shallow bowl filled with water so that if seen from above it forms a square-shaped mirror. In the corner where the finger points the water springs and flows through rebated channels, when seen from below, it makes its way, it will flow down, purl on stones so that it will be possible to take it into hands. In the bottom part the water will flow into a channel which will be beginning of the 400 m long demogram.

The bronze hand - cca 250 cm from the obelisk a naturalistically forrmed hand with an upright finger grows from the pavement pointing on one spot in the upper corner of the obelisk and it nearly touches it. This organic shape forms a desirable contrast to the pure and straight lines of the obelisk and together with it evokes a gate which one can come through from the history to the present of the new pedestrian zone and back.

A Latin inscription was placed on the surface of the obelisk, close to its upper edge: RES FUTURUS IN MANIBUS VESTRIS HABETIS, which means „future things are in your hands" and  it will form a ring in the perimetre of the prism.

The artefact design in the upper part of the King George Square is a stone romanesque obelisk with max. height 2.5 m, eventually with waterfall in its upper part. A round drainage hake lies below it finishing arrestment grid passing through the middle of the pedestrian zone.
